Camp Bonfire

Camp Bonfire is a purpose-built adult camp in the classic sleepaway lane, based in Pennsylvania. This is not a retreat center with a camp theme bolted on; the format is a weekend-length sleepaway with programmed activities, communal meals, and the deliberate structure of a real summer camp, aimed squarely at grown-ups.

Founded by Philly theatre artist Benjamin Camp and poet Jacob Winterstein, Camp Bonfire took over a boys' camp on Lake Owego in the Poconos for 21+ weekends of archery, ropes courses, kite-making, and nightly bonfires, with a distinctly artsy, no-self-improvement ethos. Press coverage runs 2015-2019 and then goes silent. As of August 2026 its website is offline (broken TLS certificate) and its old campbonfire.online domain has lapsed to an unrelated blog, so it appears defunct.

The experience

Practical picture: the format is weekend sleepaway (all-inclusive, ~175 campers per session). A short sleepaway is the most forgiving on-ramp into camp life, and this one follows that playbook: a couple of nights in, all logistics handled. This is an adults-only environment: no kids programming, no family sessions mixed in.
